The transportation of people and goods is an important part of nearly everyone’s life. Measurements such as speed, fuel consumption, length of trip, and cost of transportation use rates that can be modelled using rational functions. It is also common to combine functions using function operations to simplify calculations related to transportation.

In this module you will investigate the following questions:

To investigate the module questions, you will focus on the lessons and questions in the table.

Lesson Questions

1

Exploring Rational Functions

How can rational functions be graphed and interpreted?

2

Analyzing Rational Functions How can you determine when a discontinuity will occur in a function and what kind of discontinuity it will be?

3

Rational Graphs and Equations How can the graphs of rational functions be used to estimate solutions to a rational equation?

4

Adding and Subtracting Functions How can functions be added or subtracted?

The Module 7 Project: Shipping Wars will focus on how rational functions can be used to determine shipping rates and how function operations can be used to simplify shipping problems. You will complete the Module 7 Project as you work through the lessons. You might want to check the Module 7 Project for a sneak peek now.
