Mathematics Program

 

In Mathematics 30-1 Learn EveryWare you will develop skills and knowledge that will help you to apply mathematical concepts and solve mathematical problems with confidence. As you progress through this course, you will be encouraged to engage in conversations with others. Through these discussions with your fellow learners, you will learn to communicate and reason mathematically as well as express your understanding.


The Alberta Program of Studies sets out what students are expected to learn in mathematics courses. These expectations are organized into topics. Under each topic are one or more general outcomes.

 

The three Mathematics 30-1 topics and their general outcomes are shown in the following table. For a complete list of the specific learning outcomes related to Mathematics 30-1, read through “Mathematics 30-1 Program of Studies.”

 

Topics

General Outcomes

Permutations, Combinations, and the Binomial Theorem
Develop algebraic and numeric reasoning that involves combinatorics.
Trigonometry
Develop trigonometric reasoning.
Relations and Functions
Develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations.

To receive credit for this course, you must write the diploma exam for Mathematics 30-1.

Mathematics 30-1 consists of eight modules:

Getting Started

 

Prerequisite Course Mathematics 20-1 or 30-2

Textbook

The textbook you will be using for this course is McGraw-Hill Ryerson's Pre-Calculus 12. You can use either the hard copy or digital copy of the textbook.

LearnAlberta

 

 

LearnAlberta.ca is a protected digital learning resource environment that will be used in this course. To access some of the resources on LearnAlberta.ca, a password may be required. If you find a password is required, contact your teacher or school to get one. No fee is required to use LearnAlberta.

Course Folder

Create a course folder to store responses, assignments, notes, Glossary Terms, and Formula Sheet. This can be either a physical folder where you place hard copies of your work or an online or digital folder for electronic copies. Consult your teacher to determine the desired type and location of this portfolio.

Graphing Calculator Graphing technology is required for this course. A graphing calculator is one possible choice. Only approved calculators are allowed to be used for the diploma exam. Contact your teacher or search the Alberta Education website for a list of approved calculators.
Toolkit

The Toolkit is a collection of resources that you will access repeatedly throughout the course. For example, you can access grid-paper templates in the Toolkit at any time.

Materials and Equipment

Time
  • Each lesson in Mathematics 30-1 is designed to be completed in approximately two hours.
  • You may find that you require more or less time to complete individual lessons. It is important that you progress at your own pace, based on your individual learning requirements.
  • This time estimation does not include time required to complete Going Beyond activities or the Module Project.

Lesson Component Description
Share
  • In Share activities, you work with a partner or group to exchange ideas and knowledge and to think about and respond to what has been presented in the exchange.
  • This may involve communication using a virtual medium, such as e-mail or a discussion board, or a direct method, such as a phone call or a face-to-face conversation.
  • When exchanging ideas, make sure to include support for your response. Support could be in the form of words, graphs, and/or calculations. You should reply to other students’ responses and build on their ideas to come to a deeper understanding of the topic.
  • Check with your teacher to determine the method you will use to connect with other students for Share activities and whether you are required to keep a summary of the Share in your course folder.
Try This
  • In the Try This section of a lesson you will respond to a set of questions or complete a task as you begin to learn a new concept.
  • Save all your responses in your course folder.
  • You may be provided with hints.
Self-Check
  • Self-Check provides you with a set of questions that you can use for practice, to gain competency, and to check your progress.
  • After you answer each question, access the suggested answer.
  • If you struggle with a question, you may need to spend more time reviewing resources and you might want to talk to your teacher.
Math Lab
  • In Math Lab you are asked to use the scientific process to explore a mathematical question.
  • Save all your responses in your course folder.

Glossary Terms

  • Throughout this course, you will encounter new mathematics terms that will be useful to keep track of as you move through the lessons.
  • Use the document titled Glossary Terms. Give this file an appropriate name and save this document to your course folder. You will update this document throughout the module.
  • For more information about how to complete the Glossary refer to Glossary Terms.

Formula Sheet

  • Throughout this course you will encounter formulas that you will use to solve problems. It is useful to keep track of the formulas as you move through the lessons so that you will be able to review all of them at the end of the module and course.
  • Use the document titled Formula Sheet. Give this file an appropriate name and save this document to your course folder. You will update this document throughout the module.
  • For more information about how to complete the Formula Sheet, refer to Formula Sheet.
  • You will receive a different formula sheet when you write your Diploma Exam for this course. This formula sheet can be found in the Information Bulletin for Mathematics 30-1 on the Alberta Education website. Select Mathematics 30-1 under Information Bulletins. Check with your teacher if you cannot find the Diploma Exam formula sheet.

  • In each module you will complete a module project designed to help you apply your understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills to real-world situations.
  • In many cases you will complete a part of the module project during each lesson.
  • Not all lessons will have a module project component.
  • Any project work you complete during a lesson should be stored in your course folder.
Going Beyond
  • This activity or problem provides an opportunity to challenge and enrich your knowledge and skills beyond the learning objectives of the lesson and/or course.
