Module 3: Lesson 3

Self-Check 2
  1. Questions 1.a. and 2.a. on page 147 of the textbook.

    1.
      1. Because the right side of the equation is already zero and the equation has already been factored, the only step is to set each factor equal to zero and solve for x.

    2.
      1. For this question, it may be helpful to recognize that the equation (x + 1)2(x + 2) = 0 can be written as (x + 1)(x + 1)(x + 2) = 0. It is not necessary to do this every time the question is solved, but it may be beneficial while you are still learning the concept.

Because the right side of the equation is already zero and the equation has already been factored, the only step is to set each factor equal to zero and solve for x.

Because two of the answers are the same, the solution is x = −1, −2.
