Module 2: Lesson 2

Are You Ready?

    1. To determine the x-intercepts, let y = 0.

      The x-intercepts are −4 and 4.

      To determine the y-intercepts, let x = 0.

      The y-intercept is 16.

      Using the form y = a(xp)2 + q, you know that the vertex is (p, q).

When looking at y = −x2 + 16, the vertex is (0, 16). The a value is negative, so the parabola opens down and there is a maximum value of 16.
