Module 2: Lesson 2

Are You Ready?

    1. To determine the x-intercepts, let y = 0.

      The x-intercepts are −3 and 3.

      To determine the y-intercepts, let x = 0.

      The y-intercept is −9.

      Using the form y = a(xp)2 + q, you know that the vertex is (p, q).

When you look at y = x2 − 9, the vertex is (0, −9). The a value is positive, so the parabola opens up and there is a minimum value of −9.
