Module 6: Building a Support System in Your Job

Getting Support from Others

Violet recognized that it would be too stressful for a worker to deal with the health issues of a whole community alone, so she helped develop a team. In order to have a strong functioning team she mentions several issues that had to be worked on first. These issues included:

  • Boundaries
  • Confidentiality
  • Personal limitations
  • Self awareness
  • Any personal issues that might impact services

Do you have some of the same issues that Violet brought up?

You will have the chance to reflect on this as part of your Healthy Healer Workplace Plan.

In addition to working with a team, experienced health providers often turn to one or two particular individuals for support.

  Reflect on the following questions:

  • What characteristics do you look for in people that you turn to for support?
  • Who are people at your job, or in the broader health profession that you can turn to for support.
  • Now, think about who turns to you for support? What can do to make it easier for them to connect with you?
