Module 6: Building a Support System in Your Job

Communication and Personality Types

There are many similarities between the different personality tests. Whatever the test results, there are a couple of key concepts to keep in mind.

1.  All of us are a combination of personality traits. We all think and feel; we are all organized or disorganized to some degree, we all value various degrees of structure and freedom.

2.  No one color or one personality type is better than another. All “colors” are needed in order to do a thorough job. One person can add detail, while another ensures order, another can attend to the material being presented sensitively, another can be in charge of making things fun and interesting.

3.  The differences in personality types and communication styles plays out in the workplace in several ways. Using the True Colors personality types, we will explore the work dynamics in a case study of a remote clinic.

Personality Types - Case Study:

John works in a village clinic of almost 400 people. In the case study, listen for the differences and strengths of the personality types among his co-workers.

Think about and be prepared to discuss during class:

 1. What are the strengths and challenges of John’s personality type when working with clients and co-workers?

 2. What are the strengths and challenges of Sam’s personality type as a supervisor to John and other employees?

 3.  Why do you think John and his supervisor, Sam, are having communication problems?

(Remember, one personality type or color is not better than another.)

Let's hear some more about who John works with . . .

Now that you have heard more about John’s co-workers, think about the following questions:

  • What kinds of communication problems do you think Mary (Blue) and Clara (Gold) might develop between them?

  • John, Sam, Mary and Clara are all very good at their work, and really valuable to their agency. Take a moment to consider what each person contributes to the team?

John (Green)       Sam (Orange)

Mary (Blue)      Clara (Gold)

We will discuss this case study and our personality types during class this week.
