Being "In" Your Body
Dr. Gary Ferguson will talk about the connection between a healthy body and a healthy mind. We have split the video into two parts. First, he will discuss the concept of "being in your body.”
Wellness: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind - part 1
Gary Ferguson, BS, ND. Unangan/Aleut
Wellness and Prevention, Director Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium
Dr. Ferguson talks about "being in your body” as a way to deal with stress. The more you notice and feel your body, the less stress you will experience. In part I, Dr. Ferguson discusses two concepts.
Sleep:
We all know that sleep is important. Did you know it's also associated with weight gain?
According to the National Institutes of Health, "sleep affects growth and stress hormones, our immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure, and cardiovascular health.”1 Lack of sleep increases the risk for obesity, heart disease, and infection. Recent studies 2,3 have suggested an association between sleep duration and weight gain. Sleeping less than five hours -- or more than nine hours -- a night appears to increase the likelihood of weight gain.

Think about how many hours you typically get a night. Do you get enough? Is this a healthy habit you want to focus on this week? If so, make a note in your eJournal. |
