Module 1: I Love My Job

Reframing our Thinking: Part 3*

One way to gain control of a situation is to reframe it.  The concept of “reframing” allows you to see your stress and problems from a fresh perspective.

reframe

Listen to this woman's account of a crisis situation and her experience.

By reframing her situation, the story teller regained control of her situation.

Activity How did this woman reframe her situation?  Think back to a time when you reframed a negative situation into a positive one

As with most things human, locus of control is not an either/or proposition, but rather a range that varies with the person and the situation. Even when we can’t change the actual situation, we can gain control by changing our attitude toward it, just like the woman with the broken leg.

"Reframing” enables us to take control over how we see and feel about a situation, but in order to do so, we need to believe we have some control.

Go back to the handout you printed off,  “What Makes a Good Job”. Now, complete part 3. As a result of doing this activity, what insight have you gained about your job and your feelings about it?

In your eJournal answer the following questions

  • What are the three elements of a job that are most important to you?
  • What are the elements you marked with a star (these are the elements of your job you have the most control over, in terms of changing your perspective or attitude.) Which element are you willing to try to change?
  • Reflect upon this question: How do I contribute to my own unhappiness at work and what can I do to change it? Describe what you can do to change some of the unhappiness you feel at work.

We'll check back in with you later to see how you are doing.

Compete your activity by writing in your eJournal. You will be using this throughout the course. Only you and your instructor will see this eJournal.
