Healthy Healers Course Objectives

1. Participants will develop and adopt new self-care habits.

2. Participants will build, or have in place, a sustainable support system.

3. Participants will be more positive and energized about their job.

Weekly Learning Objectives

Each week the module has three to four learning objectives. It is expected the participants will . . .

Module 1 - I Love My Job

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between one’s attitude and job satisfaction.
  • Understand the concept of locus of control.
  • Identify strategies to maintain healthy boundaries.
  • Understand the concept of mindfulness; learn and practice a mindfulness exercise.

Module 2 - Job Stress

  • Identify strategies to reduce work stress at home.
  • Identify specific things in the job that cause the most stress.
  • Describe how the brain and body responds to stress.
  • Describe and practice positive self-talk.

Module 3 - Balancing: Body and Mind

  • Describe what physical health and wellness is and the habits that contribute to it.
  • Practice a new physical wellness activity.
  • Practice and reflect on a new mindfulness habit.

Module 4 - Emotional Balance and Spiritual Connections

  • Recognize the relationship between my work and spirituality; identify where to find meaning in my work and life.
  • Understand what compassion fatigue is and how it affects health providers.
  • Understand how to maintain balance under stress; learn and practice two life balancing activities.
  • Understand the concept of gratitude; practice a gratitude exercise related to improved job performance.

Module 5 - Balance: Past and Present

  • Understand how historical trauma impacts the present.
  • Identify my family's and/or culture’s historical strengths.
  • Understand how personal history of trauma can impact work.
  • Learn and practice strategies to manage stress-related triggers. 

Module 6 - Building a Support System in your Job

  • Understand the role of personality and communication styles in building supportive workplace relationships; identify my personal communication style.
  • Identify ways I can create a sustainable workplace support system.
  • Identify ways employers can better support tribal health providers.

Module 7 - Building a Sustainable Community Support System

  • Identify the issues and develop strategies to maintain personal boundaries in the community.
  • Develop strategies to build a community support system (including people to turn to, for support).
  • Develop strategies to build a supportive relationship with the community and local government.

Module 8 - Bringing it all Together

  • Identify strategies and commit to maintain personal self-care activities.
  • Identify strategies and commit to maintaining a support system.
  • Share strategies for personal, workplace and comity wellness by presenting my Healthy Healers Plan.
