Module 1 Tobacco Dependence
Introduction to Module 1
Module 1 will provide an overview of tobacco use from a variety of perspectives including how tobacco use impacts the citizens of Alaska. The module will also provide some information regarding addiction, relapse, benefits of quitting, and how to assess these issues. Also, you will be introduced to the first case study for this course, which you will use more than once to incorporate practical application into your learning. This video will give you an overview of the topics we will examine in Module 1.
The following are the Core Competencies for Module 1 of the TTS Training course:
- Identify the prevalence and patterns of tobacco use, dependence and cessation in the country and region in which the treatment is provided, and how the rates vary across demographic, economic and cultural subgroups.
- Explain the health consequences of tobacco use as well as benefits of quitting, and the basic mechanisms of the more common tobacco-induced disorders.
- Identify how tobacco dependence develops and explain the biological, psychological, and social causes of tobacco dependence.
- Identify the chronic relapsing nature of tobacco dependence, including typical relapse patterns, and predisposing factors.
- Summarize and be able to apply valid and reliable diagnostic criteria for tobacco dependence.
- Utilize the findings of national reports, and research studies.
- Present information that is gender, age and culturally relevant.
- Present resources on information presented in this module.
In Module 1 the assignment will be based on a case study titled 'Emily's Story'. Please read it thoroughly as many of the lessons will relate to back this story.
